South Woodham Ferrers take league title with a game still to go

A large crowd turned up with big expectations today, but with a Sudbury side fighting to avoid relegation this match was no foregone conclusion. Simply put a win today and a Norwich defeat at Cantabs would see the boys crowned champions.
The game got off to a very competitive start with both sets of backs throwing the ball about, but it was SWF who got their pack going forward and from a line out catch and drive second row Greg Tighe went over to see SWF ahead 5-0. This gave the whole team a lift and SWF dominated the game for a prolonged period an it was Duggan who extended the lead in the 21st when the ball found him on the wing. The Sudbury cover tackled him but could not hold him up as he crashed over to push the scoreboard to 10-0 for SWF. Further pressure saw Sudbury penalised 25 metres out and in front of the posts Brown made no mistake with the kick on the stroke of halftime. SWF were 13-0 up but not home yet, however the news from cambridge was positive Cantabs were leading Norwich in a tight game.
SWF took the field for the second half and Sudbury came out and immediately upped the pressure on the SWF defence which held firm with Morgan, Apthorp and Searles tackling anything that came their way. In the 46th minute the pressure told and SWF conceded a penalty to Sudbury who took the easy 3 points on offer. SWF then stepped up their game and pounded away at the Sudbury defence in their 22 and it was fitting that Gittos scored the try to leave the score 18-3. Sudbury dominated matters for the last quarter but again the SWF defence was solid, but they could not stop Sudbury scoring a much deserved try near the end. A great win under pressure secured the promotion and in the dressing room minutes later the icing on the cake Norwich had lost and the celebrations began as confirmation was received that SWF WERE CHAMPIONS. Well done to Tony, Craig, Al boy and Nigel and to all the players, a fantastic achievement for all concerned.
