SWF celebrate champions status with solid win against Old Brentwoods

As the curtain came down on a fantastic season for the club it was appropriate in this weather decimated season that the sun should shine on the final game at Saltcoats. It was a new feeling for the boys to take to the pitch with no pressure and with Old Brentwoods safely in mid table both teams could express themselves without reservation and it was SWF who came out of the blocks with centre Apthorp scoring the opening try after 3 minutes.

Both sides were moving the ball through their backs as often as they could and it was scrum half Lockwood who scored his first try of the season after 8 minutes to leave SWF ahead 10-0. Both our try scorers have not been prolific this year, but the contest for top try scorer was yet to materialise. This was due to Old Brentwoods refusal to lay down and they put a lot of pressure on SWF in the next 15 minutes and were only denied a great team try by a knock on in the corner just as the winger was about to crash over. But from the resulting scrum they nicked the ball and scored their first try.

SWF seemed to have gone asleep and it was Wilson who injected the boost needed when from a forwards move he scored a try which was converted, to draw level on tries for the season with Duggan, who got the message and 2 minutes later crashed through about 4 tackling efforts to score his try to leave him one ahead in try scoring. This left the score 22-5 to SWF at half time.

Old brentwoods came out firing on all cylinders and in the 46th minute after an endless number of scrums they finally got the ball to their speedy back Roland Johnson who crossed close to the posts to leave any easy conversion, and bring Old Brentwoods to within 10 points. SWF again seemed to have fell asleep, but they roused themselves for the final quarter.

Winger Price scored a fine try in the 66th minute when getting the ball on the 22 he outpaced the covering defenders and left Reeve to convert. The final piece of a very good game and a pulsating season came to second row Wilson who crossed for a great try in the 73rd minute to leave him tied with Duggan for tries scored this season.

This left the final score at 34-12 and meant that SWF had finished the season as champions by 6 points, and in case people doubted how good the season had been they were unbeaten at home and had the best points difference to emphasise their standing as champions.

A great season was celebrated robustly by both the whole squad and their supporters at the games end. A proud day for this village club!!!
