SWF travelled to Upminster defending an unbeaten run which had gone back to their Wanstead game in the early part of the season, but recent good form from Upminster suggested a tough assignment ahead. They got off to the worst possible start when in the 3rd minute Upminster went ahead with a soft try which was well finished off on the out side by their winger, the conversion was missed so the score was 5-0 to Upminster. SWF were coping with the famed slope in most parts of the game but Upminster were dominant in the scrum, but chances for either side in the rest of the half were few and far between. SWF did have a couple of long range penalty attempts go close but the score was to stay the same until half time.
The second half began with SWF putting severe pressure on Upminsters try line and a couple of times it was only down to some strong Upminster defence that stopped SWF levelling. But the try inevitably came when the forwards battered relentlessly at the try line and after about 6 phases in the 5 metre are awe crossed to level. An ominous sign was the conversion hitting the crossbar to deny us the lead. Upminster came back at us and again the game became a midfield battle, but when Upminster conceded a proffesional foul reeve slotted the close in penalty to leave SWF ahead 8-5 with 15 minutes to go.
The last phase of the game saw it become more open and both sides went looking for the killer score and it was Upminster who got it when from a line out the ball went to their winger who from near the half way line cut a swathe through the SWF defence to score a converted try to leave Upminster ahead 12-8 with 9 minutes left. The game finished with SWF camped in the Upminster 22 to highlight the seesaw nature of the match. A good battling game in the poor conditions that could have gone either way.
