SWF miss out on chance to top the table as Cantabs dominate proceedings

SWF turned up in cambridge knowing that a win in this game would go along way to ensuring promotion this season, but they came up against a Cantabs side who were resolute in defence when needed and who took their scoring opportunities well to inflict SWF biggest defeat of the season. It all started well enough with SWF taking an early lead when Harper converted a 5th minute penalty to leave us ahead 3-0. Both sides pushed hard for further scores but both defences were dominating the game, but also SWF were losing the ball just when they got themselves into dangerous situations too often and thus spurning the chance to create some momentum. In the 20th minute Cantabs scored there first penalty and this started a run of penalties for them and in the 39th minute they were 9-3 up. SWF really needed a break to regroup but cruelly Cantabs scored a try right on the stroke of half time which saw the score14-3 at the break.

SWF needed to come out firing in the second half but again sloppy handling and good defence kept them at bay and Cantabs continued to push the scoreboard on in the 48th minute with a penalty to lead 17-3. SWF kept pushing hard and on a couple of occasions got very close to the Cantabs line but the defence was very well organised and stood fast to deny SWF any sort of foothold in the game. Even when Cantabs were reduced to 10 men SWF could not capitalise on their extra man, and it was game over when in the 79th minute Cantabs scored their second try to finish the game 22-3 winners. Cantabs fully deserved their win and SWF know that with their last 3 games to come it is still all in their own hands whether they will be promoted or not this season. It promises to be a tense and exciting end to the season.
