South Woodham take maximum points in a hard fought encounter with emphatic first half display

This match was preceded by our 8s and unders Christmas party with Santa spotted in SWF rugby club and then our VPs pitted themselves against our ladies section and came out on top although there was plenty of the Christmas spirit on the touch lines. So when SWF took the pitch in Saltcoats park for the last time in 2012 they had to cast off the party mood and set about business. Canvey is always a tough encounter and this game was to be no exception as the tackling from both teams was ferocious, but it was SWF who made the first breakthrough after 6 minutes when a line out in the Canvey 22 saw the ever alert Gittos go over from the catch and drive. SWF upped the intensity and they spurned numerous opportunities to further score, but they finally broke the Canvey defence again in the 20th minute when great break from Brownie saw him go through about 3 defenders to feed Jenks who cut inside the last defender to score under the posts, converted by Brownie.
The next 15 minutes were all SWF and they scored two further tries to take the game away from Canvey, first in the 28th minute, a rolling maul developed in the 22 and a brilliant peel from Sharp and support from Wilson saw them both driving over the Canvey line with Wilson scoring the try. Three minutes later a beautiful kick through from Brownie saw Jenks race through to touch down in the corner for the important 4th try, this left the score at halftime SWF 22 Canvey 0

The first 25 minutes of the second half saw Canvey really push hard for a score and only several good tackles stopped them from coming back into the game. But SWF were not to be denied more scoring opportunities and with Canvey having expended a lot of effort they began to tire and SWF crossed for another try when winger Price took a great pass on the wing to score a try in the corner in the 65th minute.

They went further ahead in the 75th minute when a catch and drive from a 5 metre line out saw the whole pack crash over the line and as everybody was by now covered in mud we couldn't tell who had actually scored. But the pack deserve the credit for another well executed move. SWF rounded off the game with a try brought about by a grubber kick from a very impressive Brownie touched down by Picky. Brownie converted both tries to leave the final score 41-0

A great performance and result which finishes 2012 off at Saltcoats and a very good year for the team. Well done to all concerned.
