Even though the game was relocated to the William de Ferrers school pitch it was still a fairly muddy surface which greeted both teams and given the conditions produced a good quality game for the supporters to enjoy. South Woodham made a flying start with a penalty after 2 minutes and after a line out and drive sharp crossed for a try in the fifth minute, this was followed by a Duggan solo effort when from the half way line he evaded 3 Harlow defenders to scored a fine try to leave SWF 15-0 ahead after 10 minutes.
Harlow then upped their game and their forwards really got the bit between their teeth and led the fight back, twice they bore down on the SWF try line only for good defending to hold them out, but SWF could do nothing about the converted try they scored in the 27th minute to leave the score at 15-7 and this was the score at half time.
In the second half Harlow pinned SWF in their half for long periods but in the 52nd minute SWF got into the Harlow half and from a Harlow defensive, Jenkins fielded and a great interplay with Duggan saw the winger racing towards the try line and 5 metres out an intelligent inside pass to Harper produced a great try. This should have eased the pressure but within 3 minutes Harlow had replied with a try of their own which came as a result of a neat inside pass. This led to a 15 minute spell of Harlow pressure which thankfully was repelled by some stout defending in the SWF ranks.
As we went into the last 5 minutes a couple of powerful rumbles forward by Langley saw SWF in the Harlow 22 and the forwards laid siege to the Harlow line and as Morgan, Gittos, Bull, and every forward battered their way to the try line it was flanker Searles who scored the all important bonus point try which was converted by Harper to leave the final score SWF 27 Harlow 14. As I said earlier a really good game in the conditions was a credit to both teams.
Squad Gittos capt, Sharp, Langley, Morgan, Tighe, Searles, Bull, Marshall, Lockwood, Brown, Harper, Apthorp, Duggan, Jenkins, Levy, Price, Murphy, Reid.
Next Saturdays visitors are Beccles and weather permitting should see a return to Saltcoats for a 2.15pm kickoff, a big crowd would be appreciated.
