who were away this weekend at Burnham

This week Woodham were due to play Burnham at home. Due to the pitches still being too wet to play on Burnham kindly offered to host the match. The boys arrived to find that they would be playing on the scenic pitch, right next to the river with a bitterly cold wind blowing down the pitch.

Burnham fielded a mixed team of U9’s and U10’s against an 11 strong Woodham contingent. After a quick warm up the first match kicked off. Both teams were quickly into the thick of things and a good game of Rugby ensued. Woodham showed they had taken on board the training from the last couple of weeks and held their positions, and set themselves out well from the breakdown. Both teams were fairly evenly matched and the score at the final whistle was 4 - 4.

After a quick turnaround (due to the cold wind), the two teams continued the excellent rugby shown in the first game. Again both teams were fairly even but Woodham slipped back into some of the old ways and left gaps where they were then punished by Burnham. Woodham let their heads drop and Burnham took the advantage winning the game at the final whistle 8 points to 4.s

The last game was slightly longer and all players rotated during the game. There were some great runs for the boys, some strong tackling, good passing and excellent set outs from the breakdown. Both teams wanted the win, but at the final whistle Woodham had just nudged ahead to take the game 7 points to 6.

Some strong determination this week with plenty of passion shown too, Woodham were unlucky to lose out by 3 points. Every one of the boys put in the effort against a team that was made up of more U10’s than it was U9’s. There were some excellent drives with the ball from Archie, Ben, Jake and Jacques, with man of the match being awarded to Ben for the 4 tries he scored during the games.

Next week we are away at Braintree, who won the Thurrock Festival earlier in the season. Keep an eye on the website in case of any last minute changes due to the weather.
