We played Canvey on a fresh winters day.
The squad was Alfie, Brad, Ellis, Hayden, Katie, Keith, Luca, Luke, and Noah. Henry came later to support the team.
We played 9-a-side for four quarters.
We opened up with a terrific try. That also woke Canvey up and they applied pressure with some strong ball carrying. Our tackling was a bit off on their stronger runners. The game pulsed back and forth between both teams and we saw some great rugby. The players enjoyed it, and the supporters loved it too.
As the quarters went on, Woodham got stronger, and the effort put in was a joy to see from both Teams. The players gave everything to make a forward gain, or to prevent the opposition making a gain. Some outstanding defence from Canvey on their own line saw them eventually running the length of the pitch to score at the other end.
The rucking from Woodham was strong, and a few players really stood out on the day for this. Brad, Ellis and Hayden in particular leading the way. Katie's drive taking most of the Canvey Team with her, wonderful determination, and retaining the ball was a highlight. Sometimes it's just the hard yards that help the team gain confidence.
In the final quarter we played an entire team of young ladies from Canvey. They played great rugby and made us work really hard. A great thing for the game.
