Good turnout for the start of the new season

This week saw the start of the new season and 12 of the boys turned out for training and registration. This season we have additional parents stepping up to help out with the coaching. Andre returns again this year to assist the team with coaching this year, and Adam joins the team taking the lead on warm up and fitness.

Adam had all the boys and the coaches undertake a 10 minute warm up to start the session. Sprints, jogs, high knee kicks and bottom kicks all part of the gruelling start following the summer layoff.

Next up was a quick game of hobbit rugby and a refresher of the tackle working with the boys in pairs, starting on their knees then progressing through to both boy and a light jog.

This progressed to talking from behind with the front player laying on the floor with a ball and on the coaches call had to jump up and run to score at the cone. The defender had to chased down and catch the attacker before he scored.

Next up was the introduction of the Maul, with a session of sumo wrestling for the ball or pushing the opponent out of the circle. The boys seemed to enjoy this and we took the skills learnt into a small game situation to finish the session up.

Next week more of the same with more games based around and building on the learning from this week. No Paul next week as he is away so David is going to lead the session. See you all next week.
