Core Values on show again

Home to Chelmsford 24th November

Squad: Byron, Charlie, Josh, Dan, Kenny R, William, Jack C, Kenny B, Jared, Thomas, Felix, Archie, Louis, Jack B, Jake.

Kenny B was off to a flying start today as the boys gave a Chelmsford a warm welcome. Straight into tackling and ripping the ball, Kenny B was straight into the Chelmsford’s attack. Unfortunately, Woodham were caught napping and were swiftly punished with a try from Chelmsford. This did not deter the boys, though. Charlie and Dan tackled well and Kenny B tackled into touch. Louis returned following his injury and put up a good defence. Chelmsford’s defence was tough to breech. Following a knock on from Chelmsford, the boys’ scrum was successful and allowed Josh to make great gain before passing to Dan, who ran in the equaliser. Just before half-time, Chelmsford bundled the ball over the line from a penalty.
Chelmsford ran in three tries in quick succession – one from a cracking interception. The Woodham boys did not give up – crunching tries from Will and Josh. Felix ripped the ball successfully and Jared made a great tackle. Chelmsford then ran in two more tries before the Woodham boys began to fight back. A great period of play began: great gain and tackles from Archie led to good ground from Felix. Byron made a fantastic tackle. Thomas got hold of the ball and led Chelmsford on a merry dance with good pressure, finally leading to Kenny B going over for Woodham’s second try. Straight from the kick-off, Kenny B bulldozed through to score Woodham’s third. End of the first game.
The second game was much closer. Josh and Will putting in quality tackles before a passing breakdown allowed Chelmsford to score. Kenny R showed great strength in his rucking today, Archie made use of his strength to make good ground. Jack C played well in the fullback position. The ball then became a hot potato and Chelmsford took advantage running in another try. Jack B then came on, providing more great tackles with Jake making up ground. Josh gained a lot of ground before Kenny B went over for his third try of the day. Following the restart, Kenny B produced yet another amazing tackle and Josh tackled Chelmsford into touch. Byron covered a lot of ground before Chelmsford stole the ball to score. Kenny R made a good run with the ball before passing to Archie. Chelmsford scored once more before the final whistle.

It was fantastic to see the training in rucking skills paying off and the newer players getting stuck into tackles, rucking and running with the ball. A lovely game of rugby showing the core values on both sides. More improvement needed in using the width of the pitch rather than running back into the pack. Back to training next week.

Mentions this week: Byron, Josh and Kenny B.
Player of the week: William – fantastic tackling this week.
