Edgy Season Opener

With a squad of 14 players, the Under 12s played a nervous season opener away to Epping and Upper Clapton. Fielding three new players, Woodham took a little time to wake up on this wet and windy Sunday morning. Epping took the kick off and scored an early try. Good tackles were made but some bunching seemed to hamper our team. After a knock on, the first scrum was given to SWFRUFC. Some crunching tackles were made by Kenny B, Josh and Charlie but still Epping managed to score. Alfie made a darting run yet Epping maintained a good defence. Yet another tackle by Kenny earned a turnover but then Epping managed to win it back, going over twice more before half-time. Half-score: 4-0.

Epping were a sizeable opposition but the Woodham boys put up a good defence with Jack C rucking over well. All of a sudden, Alfie had the ball and sprinted close to the try line. Unfortunately, the ball was lost forward. Epping took the turnover and promptly scored again. Twice. Josh then made a kick, chased it down and raced to the try line. TRY! This brought a few smiles to the boys' faces. With another two tries to Epping and a blood replacement for Dan, it seemed that the game was nearly over, when Byron nimbly dodged a few tackles and made it over the try line to make the final score 8-2.

It was a good clean game and a fine first run out for Jack B, Jared and Kenny. In the post match debrief , the boys said they needed to work on rucking, tackling and communication.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH: earned by Kenny B for his strength in the timely tackles he made this week.
Squad: Alfie, Archie, Byron (C), Charlie, Dan, Felix, Jack C, Jack B, Jake, Jared, Josh, Kenny B, Kenny R, Tom.
