for a tough morning of rugby

This week Woodham hosted Burnham and Epping Upper Clapton, although Burnham didn't have an U12's team only the younger groups.

Woodham won the toss and elected to receive the 1st Kick Off from the visitors. Conditions under foot were heavy after yesterdays rain but not as heavy as 2 weeks ago at Billericay. Epping were short of players so Woodham lent them 3 of our boys to make up the numbers.

It soon became apparent that Epping had a strong team, as they dominated the ruck, turning over Woodham easily on a number of occasions. Epping were rucking with several players before Woodham were their with one, so were always going to dominate. And it was Epping who took to the score sheet first through their captain, Jamie, who showed excellent ball skills and attacking lines, slicing through the Woodham defence on numerous occasions. Woodham were able to get one back on Epping but not before they had already added to their first try. Score at half time was 1-5 to Epping. The contest was exceptional and both teams really showed good rugby skills, even though this wasn't reflected by the score line.

The Second half saw more of the same, with Epping continuing to dominate at the ruck. Although Woodham pushed hard they were not able to secure a further try and the match finished 1-8 to Epping.

The second game continued along the same lines as the first, but Woodham held Epping at half time just 1 point down 0-1. However the second half saw Woodham's head drop after 2 tries were scored, and Epping took full advantage of this. We always encourage the boys to continue to work hard even if mistakes are made, but for most of the second half Woodham couldn't compete, and seemed like they had gone home. That said towards the end of the half Woodham kept Epping in their own 22 but were unable to break the excellent defensive line that was in front of them. Final score was 0-8 to Epping.

Although the outcome of today's match was different from the last couple of outings, several of the boys improved on previous weeks, and a well deserved mention goes to Owen on his first match since joining the team 2 weeks ago. Training again next week before another Home match against Maldon and Billericay.

Enjoy the half term and see you all next Sunday.
