in tough conditions

This week the boys travelled the short distance to host Billericay. There was some doubt earlier in the week if the fixture would go ahead, but the pitches were declared fit on Thursday. Woodham received their new rain jackets this week, predominantly funded by Team sponsors Intergas and SX Heating and Plumbing, which would be tested to their full during the morning.

Billericay won the toss and elected to kick off. The conditions weren't the best, with the ground heavy underfoot and light rain meaning the ball was going to be hard to keep hold of. Woodham started strongly on the back of last week’s win, although in the warm up they seemed half asleep. Woodham were strong in the rucks, although there was some excellent counter rucking from Billericay at the breakdown. The first try of the match went to Woodham with Harrison pushing over for the score after a team effort pushing Billericay back. The score would remain unchanged at half time.

The second half saw both teams tiring in the heavy conditions, and Billericay started to take more control in the ruck. Woodham were just not as quick rucking over and were turned over on several occasions. However the boys dug deep and managed to hold off an attacking Billericay till the final whistle. Elbow picking up an injury just before the end of the game which would seem him out for the second match, but not so bad as to rule him out for next week.

The second match saw much of the same. Bullet had an exceptional run down the left hand side of the field beating 3 tackles, one with a hand off to cross the line; unfortunately he lost control as he put the ball down, so it was disallowed. This seemed to spur the boys on and soon they were crossing the line again with Harrison taking the glory for his brace of the day. Billericay were not disheartened and continued to hold back Woodham at the ruck, again turning them over several times.

They finally crashed over when one of their larger lads ran through 3 of Woodham’s defence to score from a penalty start. The score stayed the same for the rest of the half and most of the second half. However Woodham had enough to give one more push and again it was Harrison taking the honours for his Hat trick. All the boys played well this week and the player of the week again could have gone to everyone. However this week the trophy was awarded to CJ for committing good tackles today and his continued improvement over the last few weeks.

The team this week were Alex, Ox, Ogi Bear, Crackers, Jacques, Harrison, Bullet, CJ, Elbow, Stig, Dynamo, Rhino, Jamie and George.
