A Narrow Defeat
A warm welcome from Woodford and good weather awaited the lads' first game of 2022 with full under 14s rules - full size pitch, lineouts, conversions and the addition of flankers in the scrum. Time to dust off the Christmas and New Year cobwebs and with 20 out of a possible 22 players available, this promised to be a good game.
Woodford scored twice in quick succession, converting only one. Fortunately, Woodburns didn't let their heads go down but hit back quickly with a try from Joe who also neatly converted his try. This was swiftly followed by a super try by TT which Joe also converted. Aidan and Kai were unforgiving in their tackles. Woodford's scrum was strong and proved hard to beat but the lads didn't give up. Half time score 12-14 to Woodburns.
With Woodford passing quickly out of each tackle, possession became a hard-fought battle. Minutes into the second half and TT scored again with Joe making another conversion - 12-21. Woodford hit back with another score but no conversion - 17-21. The last ten minutes were incredibly tense with Woodford piling on the pressure relentlessly but Woodburns kept strong in defence, holding them up. Unfortunately, Woodford finally managed to get the ball over the line to make the final score 22-21. The lads did themselves proud today and came so close to the win. Onwards and upwards.
Player of the match: Kai for his power and determination in tackling.
