South Woodham Ferrers U13s Vs Billericay U13s 8-0 win
26/1/20 Home Match

Man of the match James Skelt

Today, South Woodham welcomed Billericay to a muddy pitch where the weather was dry but the going was very soft.

Straight out of the gates, South Woodham hit the ground running and seemed keen to put the last match behind them. An early scrum saw James Skelt send the ball out wide through Dan Williams to Noah Watkins who had his first run out a winger. Noah used his power and speed to run the first try in.

Billericay take the restart kickoff which was gathered up and driven into contact. The woods recycle the ball and it’s given into the hands of Dan Williams who powered through the Billericay defence to run in a superb try.

Billericay try to put something together but at the breakdown, Woodham ruck well to turn over the ball. George Tickner organises his attack well and feeds Dan Williams who powers over for his second try.

Woodham continued the attack with James Skelt running a strong attacking line, beautifully selling the defender a dummy, gaining a few more yards and then off loading to Joe McClure who powered through for the try.

Another dummy by an in-form James Skelt saw the Billericay defence unlocked, with Joe McClure powering through. Great support play by James Hallett saw him in the right place at the right time to receive an intelligent and unselfish pass by Joe to carry the ball over the line for a great finish.

The next passage of play saw a great attacking run by Nathan Davies, offloaded to James Skelt who powered into contact, some great rucking saw the ball recycled out wide to Dan Williams who crossed the line for his 3rd try.

A fine attacking run was made by Joe only to be cut short by an illegal shoulder charge by Billericay prop. Joe bravely continued to play having been checked for injuries first.

Further dynamic runs were made by Frank Nichol who was denied a try by the Billericay fullback taking him into touch.

The boys have taken to heart the ethos of team tries rather than individual glory and this was best demonstrated by the excellent play displayed by the likes of Hayden Allen and Tom Woolard who quietly went about the business of supporting, tackling and rucking that produced so much success for the team.

A great attacking run by Noah Watkins was brought to a halt by Billericay defence swamping him. Noah kept his cool and found James Skelt in close support to receive the off load and then drive over the line for the 7th try of the day.

Towards the end of the first half, Billericay conceded a penalty that found them defending on their own try line. A power run by Joe McClure saw the defence bounced off like a bowling pin to score the 8th unanswered try.

In the interest of sportsmanship, the 2 teams were mixed up for the second half which produced some highly competitive “end to end” play that was enjoyed by the players and spectators alike.

A fantastic return to form by South Woodham who looked very strong from the outset and now need to consolidate this into a regular winning mindset.
