for friendly match

It was perfect weather for Rugby and the SWF U13 squad were looking forward to the Friendly home game against Harlow this weekend. Coaches had agreed beforehand that, due to the size of the Harlow Squad, that it would be split into quarters to allow rest for the Woodham lads. The U13’s, who’s numbers have grown from 9 post season and up to an impressive 16 now, were also welcoming another new arrival from Willie D’s, Daniel Williams.

From kick off the boys really pressed well and won the first few scrums and rucked over convincingly well, only to fall behind to a swift counter and a well worked try from Harlow. The boys never put their heads down and really tried to reverse the score line, pushing through the centre with George and James trying to create something for the centres, Noah and new boy Dan to get their teeth into. Some bone crunching tackles from Dan, as well as some probing runs, and some great tackles by Tom H, Josh and James H really set the tone and the score come the end of the 1st two quarters didn’t match up to the game we were all were watching, however, Harlow were in control 3 tries to 0.

A double whammy of tries from Harlow early on didn’t dent the boy’s confidence and Presley and Ewan were involved in some tasty exchanges and runs down the wings that had the home crowd cheering. A wonderful kick from George over the top really should have been capitalised or turned into something more only for Harlow’s excellent winger counter attacking and scoring.

Nathan come on as fly half and really took it to Harlow. His direct running and intelligent play opened up the game only for him having to leave the field due to injury. Only a slight one we all hope.

Enter Big Joe, who managed to score one of his trademark hustle and bustle runs from the halfway line. Really good play from the big man and I think it is fair to say Harlow struggled with his play throughout. Harlow did nip up the other end to score only for Joe to score another much similar to his 1st.

A thoroughly entertaining game for all the spectators and the U13s development really has been great to watch. With the newcomers to the team starting to understand our drills more and what we expect of this talented bunch.

Don’t let the score deceive you. Once the penny drops for the U13 there will be many a team put to the sword.

Well done guys.
