in Waterfall Cup Final

Sunday saw the SWFRFC U13’s travel to Wanstead for their last game of the season. Having played them in the first round of the Cup and lose 50-0, this was a massive achievement by the team to get into ‘Final 3’; with them being a League1 team and us a League 2 team.
Since their initial meeting at the start of the season SWF had improved with some good wins along the way, so the game would be a true show of how far the team had progressed this season.

SWF started by receiving the ball and showed they meant business with a couple of good passes and a streaking run from Zach to score in the corner. 5-0 to SWF in less than two minutes. SWF continued to push forward for much of the opening period but Wanstead were now starting to wake up and get back in the game. By 15 minutes the score was 5-5. From the restart SWF combined good offloading and support play to get within 10m of the try line when Archie twisted and turned and went through 4 defenders to dot down. Like two boxers trading punches blow for blow, Wanstead responded with another try and at half time it was 10-10.

Wanstead started to bring on subs for the second half and they were first to score in this period making it 15-10 to the home team. However, Zach had another powerful run and manged to square the game at 15-15. Both teams had some chances, the best for SWF made by Ryan who was stopped short of the try line by inches. With 3 minutes to go, this was a game that was going to the wire with a try either way deciding who took the Cup. Unfortunately for SWF, Wanstead scored next with a good strong run through our defenders and this was followed up a minute later with another try. Final score 25-15 to Wanstead.

This had been a cracking game of rugby which all who had watched the game agreed. A special mention needs to go out to the SWF forwards who won most of the scrums and secured or cleared out at the rucks against a much bigger set of Wanstead forwards. That said, this was a massive performance by a set of players who had stuck with it, began to believe in themselves and their team mates and played for each other as a team. Well done to everyone.

Team on the day was Ryan, Liam, William, Mason, Harrison, Zach, Rowan, Alfie, Harry, Charlie, Archie, Oliver, Adam, Reece, Bradley.
