Woodham v Westcliff

This weekend saw SWFRFC U13’s take on Westcliff in this week’s fixture. After 2 games and 2 losses so far this season; would the team turn up this week and play like we know they can? After a good warm up in the sunshine, it was match time.

From the outset, Woodham looked a completely different team to the one that played the last few weeks. From receiving the kick off, they were soon making ground up the field with phase after phase of play keeping Woodham in Westcliff’s 22 area. Then from the middle of the park the ball was quickly passed right into the hands of Haz who beat the covering defender to dot down in the corner. First try of the season for the U13’s which was appreciated by the crowd watching as a loud cheer went up.

The boys ran back to the centre with smiles on their faces and a sudden self-belief in their abilities. Good team work, going forward, passing wide, good support, tackling; all the attributes that make up a good performance came out in the first half. Further tries from Max (2), Brad, Ryan and Alfie saw Woodham take a 30-0 lead at half time.

With multiple subs being made by the Westcliff team at half time, the 2nd half was a much tougher experience. Woodham still played well but Westcliff’s fresher players started to make inroads and within 7 minutes they went over for their first try. They scored twice more to make the final score 30-15 to Woodham. Well done to all the team this week; this is how you can play, believe in yourselves and let’s take this forward into the next 2 training sessions before we meet Mersea in the next match.
