Woodham Host Basildon

This weekend Woodham were at home and hosting Basildon who made the short journey up the road. The weather was dry and there was little wind, it felt more like a spring day than early October.

After a change of pitches due to cracking of the ground with the extended dry spell, the two teams took to the field. The visitors won the toss and elected to receive. It was agreed there would be 4 quarters of 13 minutes rather than the standard 25 minutes per half to allow the larger Basildon Team to all have sufficient play time.

Woodham started strong and were the first ones on the score sheet with a try from captain Samuel. But the visitors were not to rest on their laurels and soon levelled the score. Woodham's pack was strong and winning lots of the Scrum, and there was effective breakdown rips for Joshua, Harrison and Ashley.

The game continued in similar vein for the rest of the quarter and most of the next quarter, with Woodham adding 2 more through Samuel and Ross, but the visitors taking a narrow lead after the second quarter 20 - 15. But Basildon were able to swap out players for the next quarter and this showed as the Woodham boys started to tire, although their resolve was strong. Basildon scoring 2 more from runs straight through the Woodham defence.

Woodham did fight back and managed another score through Captain Samuel, but the visitors were too strong for Woodham; playing the league above Woodham this season; and the final score was 20 - 40 to Basildon.

Woodham did themselves proud and Harrison was awarded player of the match with Captain Samuel getting Effort of the match. Wally of the week went to Ross (for leaving his bag in the changing room) and Harrison (for leaving his shorts in the changing room). The team this week were Alex, Ashley, Ben, Dan, Dylon, Harrison, Jack, Jamie, Joshua, Lewis Wi, Ross, Oliver, Owen and Samuel. The boys are back training next week from 12:00 at Saltcoats.
