Away at Ongar

This week the U15’s continued their Cup progress on the back of a win against Epping & Upper Clapton in the 2nd Round. The game, away at Ongar, would be the second match against the home side this season, with Ongar winning the last game 47 – 7.

Woodham kicked off into the strong wind and gave good chase. Ongar scoped up the ball and quickly pushed the Woodham team back into their own half. Good tackles coming in from the Woodham forwards halted the Ongar attack, but a quick recycle of the ball saw the home team break free and cross the Woodham try line for the first of the match after 3 minutes. With the conversion they took the lead 7 - 0.

Woodham regrouped and pushed hard. This saw a good 10 minutes of play with both sides testing each other’s defence, but again Ongar took the advantage breaking the Woodham defensive line and dotting down under the posts. The conversion moving the hosts to 14 – 0.

Both sides again pushing for possession, a further 10 minutes of fairly even play before the hosts started to push Woodham back into their own half. They pushed the defence back to their 5-meter line before being held up. A scrum awarded to the home side, Ongar took full advantage and drove over the line for their 3rd of the game, but not able to secure the conversion 19 – 0 with just 8 minutes left of the half.

Ongar again pushed the Woodham defence back and with 1 minute added, crossed again to close the first half, with the conversion 26 – 0.

Woodham came out in the second half and worked hard. With the wind now in their favour, the boys pushed deep into the hosts 22. Repelled by the Ongar defence, Woodham were on the back foot, but managed to regain control of the ball and through quick hands passed the ball down through the back line to Bullet who romped in a 25m run to score under the posts. Ox taking the conversion it was now 26 - 5.

Ongar seemed to have lost the drive they had in the first half and Woodham were pushing to take advantage of this. The forwards working hard to push the Ongar defence back then shipping the ball out to the backs. A long pass from Stig saw the backs open up and the ball pass through Aiden, to Lewis P who drove through 15m before offloading to Coxy who driving over the line touched down through 2 tacklers. Ox secured the conversion and the score 26 – 12.

After 45 minutes of play, Woodham seemed all out of steam and Ongar pushed back hard. With 2 trys in quick succession and both conversions missed the score was now 36 – 12 to the hosts. However, Woodham were not finished and again pushed the hosts back into their own 22. Again Bullet let loose dotting down between the posts, and Ox securing the conversion 36 – 19.

Woodham again driving forwards from the restart, Ongar were struggling to maintain the ball. Woodham secured a penalty. Ox drove the ball deep into the 22, Coxy gave chase and closely followed by 2 other Woodham backs, locked down the full back and drove him into touch 5m for the hosts line. Unfortunately, it was too late and the referee blew the final whistle.

A hard fought game today with a strong opposition, with a large number of calls seeming to favour the hosts. Each Woodham player given an objective at the start of the game, and each of them completing at least one of them, the score wasn’t as important as the player’s development.
