22/11/09 South Woodham
Ferrers RFC Under 10s v Southend.
South Woodham Under 10s visited
Southend RFC this Sunday. In the first game, South Woodham
started brightly. Joe went on a charging run and, determined
that the move would not break down, produced a well-timed
pass to enable Daniel to cross for the first try. Southend
took advantage of some missed tackles to equalise before
William J scampered down the right wing to regain the lead
with a spectacular solo effort. Southend pulled level again,
only for Joe to cross for a deserved try following a good
run by Callum S and clever link play by Callum W. Callum W
then scored after a trademark break to extend the lead.
Southend scored again, but South Woodham held on to win the
opening game 20-15.
In the second game, South Woodham again
started well, with Nathan ripping the ball in the tackle and
running in to open the scoring. Southend hit back with 2
tries of their own to lead at half-time. South Woodham
continued to defend tenaciously and looked dangerous with
ball in hand. However, Southend were dominant at the set
piece and South Woodham struggled to put together attacking
phases. Southend ran in a further brace to finish the game
20-5 winners.
The final game enabled both clubs to
give some of their less experienced players a game. Again,
South Woodham struck first. Jack M made a determined break
and Henry V took the ball on to open the scoring. William J
then added a second. Southend again hit back, but William J
ran in another long range effort. Southend responded with 2
tries of their own, despite heroic defending, with Jack M to
the fore and Alex and Mitchell putting in memorable hits. A
darting run from Jack S regained the lead, before Southend
struck twice to take the lead for the first time in the
game. With time running out, JJ charged down the left wing
to score an equalising try, the game ending 25-25.
15/11/09 South Woodham Ferrers RFC Under
10s v Stanford le Hope.
Heavy rain made way for bright skies as
South Woodham entertained Stanford le Hope. Both sides
agreed to play their more experienced players in their first
match. In one of the most exciting and fiercely fought games
this season, both teams excelled, seeking to play expansive,
attacking rugby, while being committed and resolute in
defence. The breakdown was keenly contested with both
defences forcing a number of turnovers. Nevertheless, South
Woodham opened the scoring with Nathan flying down the wing
to touch down. The game continued to ebb and flow, until
Stanford took advantage of a couple of rare missed tackles
to equalise prior to half time. The second half continued in
a similar vein. South Woodham almost broke the stalemate
when Lee crossed the line after an effective maul, only for
courageous defence to hold the ball up. In the end a draw
was a fair result.
In the second game, both teams rang the
changes. Stanford took advantage of some circumspect defence
to run in an early try. South Woodham raised their game,
competing well in the tackle area and looking to attack the
Stanford try line. However Stanford ran in a further 2 tries
to take a commanding lead at half time. The second half was
a different story, and Callum W. ran in 3 unanswered tries
to gain a creditable draw. Well done to all the players
today.
